Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a girl, Ford was battling anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by word associations. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. She joined at the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not suitable for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode from the year 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Also, she was a regular performer in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies, that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
